In just four hours
In the belly of a machine beast
I travel far.
I’m in our mother country’s heart.
And not two centuries ago
My fourth great grandmother
Started not far from here
A journey on foot
With her husband and five children
The other way
With only their feet to carry them
For much, much longer than four hours.
I’m glad to be here, to learn, to see,
But I’m far more grateful
They made that trek.
In the belly of a machine beast
I travel far.
I’m in our mother country’s heart.
And not two centuries ago
My fourth great grandmother
Started not far from here
A journey on foot
With her husband and five children
The other way
With only their feet to carry them
For much, much longer than four hours.
I’m glad to be here, to learn, to see,
But I’m far more grateful
They made that trek.
